About the muster



MobileMuster is the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry.

Initiated voluntarily by the Australian telecommunications industry in 1999, its overall aim is to prevent mobile phones ending up in landfill.

The program collects and recycles mobile phone handsets, batteries and accessories from a network of over 3,500 mobile phone retailers, local councils, government agencies and business drop off points across Australia.

The program is managed by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) on behalf of the following members who fund the program voluntarily:

- handset manufacturers -Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericission, LG Electronics, i-mate, NEC, Panasonic, Sharp
- network carriers - Telstra, Optus,Vodafone, 3 Mobile
- service providers - AAPT and Virgin Mobile
- distributors - Force Technology

The recycling service is free to consumers, schools, businesses, local councils and government agencies.

As of the 31 March 2009 over 582 tonnes of mobile phone handsets, batteries and accessories had been collected or more than 4.01 million handsets and batteries.
